The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not be subject to provisions of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, according to the latest version of the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025.
According to the proposed law, only sports bodies that are deemed as public authorities under the RTI Act will be subject to its provisions. The BCCI has been resisting attempts to bring it under the RTI scanner for years, despite recommendations from the Supreme Court, the Law Commission and the Central Information Commission.
The bill, which is currently under consideration in Parliament, aims to bring transparency and accountability in the governance of sports in India. It also seeks to provide a level playing field for all sports and athletes, and to promote the development of sports infrastructure.
However, the exemption of the BCCI from the RTI Act has raised concerns among civil society groups and activists, who argue that it undermines the spirit of transparency and accountability that the Act seeks to promote.
