, BCCI to remain outside RTI, Sahara Groundwater

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not be subject to provisions of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, according to the latest version of the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025.

According to the proposed law, only sports bodies that are registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 will be subject to the RTI Act. This means that the BCCI, which is not registered under this act, will not be subject to the RTI Act.

This decision has been criticized by many, including the Supreme Court, the Law Commission and the Central Information Commission, who have recommended that the BCCI should be subject to the RTI Act.

The BCCI has been pushing back on being labelled a “public authority” under the RTI Act for years. The latest version of the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, is the latest in a series of attempts by the BCCI to resist being subject to the RTI Act.
